Artist Statement on Placements
In my series, Placements, I am interested in finding the point at which realism breaks down into abstraction. My photographs are made through a mix of alteration, fabrication and documentation. I do little manipulation with photo editing software, preferring to work in front of the camera.
I derived the title of this series from my process of placing reflective panes of glass and mirror into a space, transforming it. As the reflections introduce other points of view, it appears as though I am collaging with the space around me. I cut the glass into different shapes, placing these abstractions into the ‘normal’ world. I introduce new colors and compose the photograph to complete a transformation.
I think of my work as visual poetry or narratives that come to life as the entirety of the installation is seen in my photographs. My pictorial ideas can be minimal, like describing a color or a set of lines, or they can allude to something more elaborate, like walking through space or a boy reading a story under a bridge.
Whether I am working with abstractions or in a more recognizable way, I see my work as an interpretation of an experience.
